Congratulations to the Symphonic Band for earning superior (1st division) ratings from all judges at the UIL Concert and Sight Reading Contest last week. We are proud of all of our concert band members for their success at UIL this year!
If you would like to hear some great jazz, come out tonight (Friday) to see the OTHS Jazz Band and Jazz Ensemble at Cinco Ranch High School at 6:30 pm and 8:00 pm respectively. They will be performing and will have the opportunity to have a clinic with some great jazz musicians afterward.
Channel 39 Broadcast
Channel 39 will be on our campus Monday morning to feature the band, choir and orchestra programs as a part of KISD’s effort to recognize the great fine arts programs in our district and being named one of the best communities for music education by NAMM. They will begin broadcasting short segments at 6:00 am with the band being featured at 7:26 am.
Wind Symphony members need to be at school on Monday at 6:30 am wearing spirit shirts and blue jeans. All other band members will not have access to the band hall between 7:00 am and 7:30 am. Students who are in first period band need to meet in the choir room at 7:25 then will move to the band hall after the Channel 39 feature is completed at 7:30.
It’s the end of the year, which means it’s audition season once again. I understand that this can be the cause of a considerable amount of stress for many people, so I wanted to address a couple of things.
First, please remember that the reason we do auditions is to place students in an ensemble/position where we think they will be the most successful. We are basing our assessment on where we see the student’s performanceat this moment in time, which does not mean that’s where they will be forever. The goal for the student should be to have their best performance so we can be as accurate as possible in placement. Also remember that past achievement does not guarantee future placement.
Second, we are committed to being as fair and transparent as possible. I always find it unfortunate when someone says a director, coach or anyone else responsible for making these types of decisions is being unfair or playing favorites. While this may be the case with some people, it is certainly not with our staff. We do not believe in operating in that manner and we also understand that doing this does not serve any positive purpose. For example, it does nobody any good to put a student in the Wind Symphony who is not yet ready to be there. It’s going to be frustrating for the rest of the group and most of all to that student. With student leader auditions, please be aware that there are over 70 students auditioning for around 30 spots. Not everyone will earn a position, but every person who auditions will have the opportunity to be a positive influence on the rest of the band.
Finally, use the audition process as an opportunity to self-evaluate. If you didn’t accomplish your goal, ask yourself why. All auditions are video recorded and we are more than happy to sit down with any student that wants to and talk through the video. This gives us an opportunity to discuss with the student the things that we are seeing or hearing that they can improve on before their next audition. This can be a very positive experience as long as it is handled in a rational and mature manner.
Marching Band Rehearsals/Color Guard Auditions
We will have the first rehearsals of the 2019 OTHS Marching Band on Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday next week from 4:30-7 pm. All current 8th graders and student leaders will attend Monday’s rehearsal and all current 8-11 graders who are planning to be in the band next year are required to attend Tuesday and Wednesday. Normal marching band attire and supplies will be needed.
Color guard auditions will take place next Monday-Wednesday from 4:30pm-7:00pm. If you know anyone who wants to be a part of the OTHS Band but is not currently, this is a great way for them to join!
Beginning next year, UIL is requiring every band member to have a physical on file with the school in order to participate in marching band (in the last two years, this has only been a Katy ISD requirement). There are multiple ways to take care of this, including seeing your family doctor, going to an urgent care, or getting a Katy ISD sponsored physical. If you are interested in getting a Katy ISD physical, please go to the link below to see when they are being offered. Your first opportunity to do this at OTHS is May 15. Please understand though that every student who participates in KISD athletics is also required to get a physical, so these sessions get pretty full. You can, however, go to any of the dates listed on any campus if another date is more convenient for you.

You must have your physical on file with the band before summer band starts. I would recommend making a copy for your own records before turning the form in to me. If you also participate in athletics, you will need to turn in separate copies to the band and to the athletics department. If you would prefer to scan in your physical form and email it to me that is fine.
There are a few opportunities in the next couple of weeks to see members of the band perform.
All of the performing bands along with the Tays JH bands will perform in our spring concert on May 9 in the OTHS PAC. This concert will begin at 6 pm.
The OTHS jazz band, jazz ensemble and jazz band from WCJH will perform at La Centerra at 6:00 pm on May 11.
The percussion studio along with the clarinet and flute choirs will perform a concert in the OTHS Band Hall on May 13 at 7:00 pm.
It is time to get your tickets for the end of the year band banquet! This is always a great evening and gives us an opportunity to celebrate the wonderful accomplishments of our students. Band Booster Meeting
We will have a general band booster meeting on Tuesday, April 30 at 7pm. The main point of business will be to approve the OTHSBBO budget for the 2019-2020 school year.
