Band News (week of 10/1-10/7)

Hey Falcons! Please see below from Mr. Bond's email for the week of Monday (10/1) through Sunday (10/7)...

Good Morning!

This is an exciting week as we finally enter the competitive season and travel to Woodforest Stadium in The Woodlands to compete at the BOA Conroe Regional on Saturday, October 6. Please come out and cheer the kids on as we will perform at 2:00 pm that day.

I mentioned this briefly the other night at Open House, but we want huge Tompkins audiences at all of our contests cheering us on! These aren’t formal concerts, so please yell and cheer and be loud! It really does help to get the performers pumped up.

We really need all hands on deck for mum building this weekend and next week. If you are available, please stop by the mum factory and give them a hand!

Please remember that our rehearsal at Legacy is tomorrow morning from 8am-noon. I hope to see everyone at the performance at 12:00 pm! Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from Legacy and should plan on arriving between 7:20 am and 7:30 am.

Here is what’s going on with the Tompkins Band this week!

Monday – Color Guard rehearsal from 3:30 pm – 6:00 pm

Tuesday – Winds and Percussion rehearsal from 3:30 pm – 6:00 pm

Wednesday – Full Band rehearsal with Mr. Spaeth from 3:30 pm – 6:00 pm

Thursday – Full Band rehearsal with Mr. Spaeth from 3:30 pm – 6:30 pm

Friday – Football Game vs. KHS at Rhodes Stadium at 7:30 pm

Saturday – BOA Conroe at Woodforest Stadium (2:00 pm performance time)

We will leave the 18 wheeler at Rhodes Stadium after our game on Friday night with instruments loaded so we don’t have to unload at school on Friday and reload on Saturday morning. The truck will leave directly from Rhodes to Woodforest after our rehearsal Saturday morning.

Region Jazz Results

Congratulations to Aditi Prabhu, William Duda and Alexa Smith for earning spots in the TMEA Region 23 Jazz Band! This is a great accomplishment and they will represent Tompkins at the Region Jazz Band clinic and concert in December. Congrats also to Aditi and Alexa for earning Area spots and having the opportunity to audition for the TMEA All State Jazz Band!

Football Game vs. KHS

Our next game will take place on Friday, October 5 vs. Katy High School at 7:30 pm at Rhodes Stadium. Please remember that all games are mandatory for all students.

Dress for this football game will be full uniform. Wind and percussion students need to wear their show shirt, performance shorts, black socks, Viper marching shoes and gloves (winds). Guard members need to wear a black shirt and black dance pants (you will change into your uniform at the game). Students must also have their flip folder, lyre, all music, instrument in working condition, guard equipment, garment bag, and their OTHS Band water bottle.

Please note that this is the 8th grade game and we want to be sure to give a warm welcome to all 150 of our incoming 8th grade OTHS Band members!

BOA Conroe

On October 6, 2018 the OTHS Band will be competing at the Bands of America Marching Contest at Woodforest Stadium in The Woodlands. This performance is required for all eligible band members. This is going to be a very long day, so we’re going to need everyone to perform at their very best to make sure everything goes smoothly.

We will have a chance to watch a few of the bands at this contest. Please be respectful of all of the performers on the field, as they have worked just as hard as us and deserve a captive, courteous audience. When in the stands, we will sit together as a group. You are encouraged to watch the bands critically, observing what they do well and what they could improve on, but not necessarily discussing out loud the weaknesses of other bands. It’s unprofessional, and you never know who may be sitting within earshot of your conversation.

Friday after the game – Load truck and leave at Rhodes Stadium

6:30 am – Band Hall Opens (eat breakfast before you arrive)

7:00 am – Inspection in the Band Hall

7:15 am – Load Buses

11:45 am – Arrive at Woodforest Stadium/Unload

12:55 pm – Warm-Up Begins

2:00 pm – Performance!

5:15 pm – Prelims Awards

After this, our schedule will be determined by whether we perform in finals or not. No matter what, we will stay for the duration of finals as either performers or spectators. If we do not march in finals, we will depart Woodforest Stadium at 10:45 pm and will dismiss at midnight. If we do march in finals, we will depart Woodforest Stadium at 11:45 pm and dismiss at 1:15 am. Dinner will be served to the students at some point after the prelims awards, depending on finals status and potential finals performance time.

As with all performances, parents, friends and other family members are absolutely encouraged to come watch the band. It is way more fun for the students to perform for a supportive, LOUD, and friendly crowd! Admission to the contest is $18 for prelims only, $18 for finals only or $27 for an all-day ticket. There is a $5 fee for parking and you should plan to get there with plenty of extra time. Traffic around the stadium can get pretty bad on a Saturday.
