Band News Week of 9-30-2019

Welcome to Bandtober! This is an exciting week as we finally enter the competitive season and travel to Legacy Stadium to compete at the BOA Houston Regional on Saturday, October 5. Please come out and cheer the kids on as we will perform at 4:15 pm that day.

I mentioned this briefly the other night at Open House, but we want huge Tompkins audiences at all of our contests cheering us on! These aren’t formal concerts, so please yell and cheer and be loud! It really does help to get the performers pumped up.

Please remember that our rehearsal at Legacy is tomorrow morning from 8am-noon. I hope to see everyone at the performance at 12:00 pm! Students are responsible for their own transportation to and from Legacy and should plan on arriving between 7:20 am and 7:30 am. The truck will be parked at Rhodes from the night before, so please meet there to unload.

We will have our next Spirit Night at Raising Canes on Monday from 5pm-9pm. You should definitely get your dinner from there on Monday and mention you’re with the band! Everyone help spread the word!

Here is what’s going on with the Tompkins Band this week!

BOA Houston

On October 5, 2019 the OTHS Band will be competing at the Bands of America Marching Contest at Legacy Stadium. This performance is required for all eligible band members. This is going to be a very long day, so we’re going to need everyone to perform at their very best to make sure everything goes smoothly.

We will have a chance to watch a few of the bands at this contest. Please be respectful of all of the performers on the field, as they have worked just as hard as us and deserve a captive, courteous audience. When in the stands, we will sit together as a group. You are encouraged to watch the bands critically, observing what they do well and what they could improve on, but not necessarily discussing out loud the weaknesses of other bands. It’s unprofessional, and you never know who may be sitting within earshot of your conversation.

10:30 am – Band Hall Opens

11:00 am – Rehearsal in OTHS Stadium

12:00 pm – Eat/Pack/Load

1:30 pm – Depart for Legacy Stadium

2:00 pm – Arrive at Legacy Stadium/Unload

3:10 pm – Warm-Up Begins

4:15 pm – Performance!

4:45 pm – Load trucks

5:15 pm – Prelims Awards

5:45 pm – Dinner at stadium

After this, our schedule will be determined by whether we perform in finals or not. If we perform in finals, we will depart Legacy at 11:30 pm and dismiss from OTHS at 12:30 am. If we do not make finals, we will depart from Legacy at 6:30 pm and dismiss from OTHS at 7:30 pm. If students want to come back to Legacy to watch finals, they will be able to do so.

Parents, please pick up your student no later than 30 minutes after our dismissal time. If this is going to be a problem, please arrange for transportation with someone else ahead of time. Repeated instances of students being picked up after this time will result in that student not being allowed to travel with the band anymore.

Parents, if you would like to pick up your student from the performance site, you will need to complete a student release form, which can be found on Charms, and return to the band directors no earlier than the school day before the event. This form must be signed by a principal in order for us to allow you to take your student. If you do not have this form turned in on time, Katy ISD will not allow us to release your student to you until we arrive back at OTHS. Also, this should only be reserved for emergency situations. The expectation is that students come back to the school with the band after all performances to help put away equipment and debrief.

Students, please remember to carry yourself with pride and class at all times while traveling with the band. Proper etiquette must be displayed at all times while wearing the uniform. Do not do anything that will ever draw negative attention to you or the Tompkins High School Band.

As with all performances, parents, friends and other family members are absolutely encouraged to come watch the band. It is way more fun for the students to perform for a supportive, LOUD, and friendly crowd! Admission to the contest is $21 for prelims only, $21 for finals only or $31 for an all-day ticket. There is a $5 fee for parking and you should plan to get there with plenty of extra time. Traffic around the stadium can get pretty bad on a Saturday.
